I thought I would try something different this Sunday afternoon. Every Sunday I ‘attempt’ to catch up on the over 200 blogs I follow through Google Reader and my inbox of Google Alerts. Here are a few of the posts and alerts that caught my attention this morning.
According to Digital Response Internet Marketers are adapting to cater for women. “The internet is one of the key marketing areas where such firms are looking to improve the way they market to women, with an increase in target advertising among the methods being used.”
I would have to say that this is not just true of Reaching Women Online but there is a slow (time to speed it up folks) adaptation by most business’ when it comes to how we market to women.
Britopian the Social media Blog is talking about Disclosure, honesty, and Social Media. It took a while to watch the video (You tube size issue kept it from working for a few days) but was worth waiting for. It is nice to not just read about how to impliment Social media for business I enjoy being able to sneak into these events through video. Stop by and listen to Andy Sernovitz’s three E’s to disclosure in social media on Michael Brito’s Blog.
No week is complete for me without catching up on Wendy Piersall’s posts. This week she wrote a post featuring 13 inspirational Entrepreneurial Women in Technology. The list included:
- Kelly Anderson
- Blog Her founders Jory Des Jardins, Lisa Stone and Elisa Camahort
Of course Wendy herself should be on the list… So my list would have 14 inspirational women. Click here for the post.
That is it for my weekly Blog Post favourites !

I just read a great little E book written by Chris Brogan. I have been both searching for and testing some tools for measuring the success of social media marketing campaigns and Chris’s E book outlines Measurement as his sixth approach.
The Ebook is concise (always appreciated by those of us who can’t seem to fit our to do list into our day) and really informative. After reading through ‘Fishing Where the Fish Are: Mapping Social Media to the Buying Cycle’, I have a few more ideas for my clients, a list of new blogs to check out and some of the Social Media Measurement tools I was looking for.
Grab Chris Brogan’s Approaches to Social media Free Ebook let me know what you think and be sure to send him some kudos for offering you some free social media knowledge.
I regularly check Jennifer Slegg’s SEO blog to learn a bit about SEO changes. SEO is not my niche by any means so her blog is a great resource of information. This morning I noticed she had attended the SEO Rehab Intervention session and she not only spent time with Dave Naylor but apparently she helped him create his power point presentation for the conference. It’s a great little resource you should check out. I am going to have to learn more about his custom SEO tools … you can grab the power point HERE
Chris’s blog is fast becoming daily sustenance for my mind. This blog post is from last month, sometimes digging back through an incredible blog is worth it when you find a great gem of a post.
Number24 is one we all need to be reminded of; “Keep your eyes on the STRATEGY of what you’re doing. Otherwise, there are tons of ways to fall into rabbit holes.”
“The impetus for the latest discussion is that Facebook now will include links to Pages (the stuff you say you’re a fan of) in public profile listings. Public profile listings are indexed by Google. Google likes links. More links means (to oversimplify it) better search rankings. Do the dots all connect?”
A little thought provoking …. is it not ?
Here is a random thought generated by an ongoing trend I’ve noticed while browsing through my Google reader:
I have noticed that many bloggers share what blog posts they are reading using Delicious bookmarks. I took a moment to consider doing the same. Being beyond busy in my life automation is generally a good idea. However, isn’t the reason we read blogs to not just gain the knowledge one offers but also to interact with the blogger. The Blog is an extension of the unique personality of the blogger is it not ? So for now I will continue to share a few of my favourite weekly reads with you enclosed within my personal chatter.
Today’s Firefox add on is Time Tracker. Although I am sure most of the sites I spend time on are all work
related with the exception of my local ‘city/ community’ forum. I can see how this could benefit users.
According to Time Tracker Firefox add on’s developer they planned to add some additional features which would be really handy. Unfortunately since their post in June they haven’t yet launched these extra options:
Planned features:
- Track time individually for specified sites
- Get back to work alarm
- Statistics
I promised to share Twitter information as I found it on the internet and if you don’t get what twitter is … I found a short video that explains it in a way that we all can ‘get twitter’.
This is a great resource …. Special thanks to Common Craft for sharing this on their blog.
A recently released study by Cone suggests that 93% of Americans believe a company should have a social media presence.
Interestingly Americans felt companies should use Social Media to;
- solve my problems (43%)
- solicit feedback (41%)
- develop new ways for consumers to interact with their brand (37%)
- market to consumers (25%)
Social media is a welcome and non intrusive form of ‘discussion’. The study supports my feeling that as companies we need to use social media as a two way vehicle to promote building relationships and rapport with our customers rather then “marketing TO them” .
You can learn more about and see the Cone results by clicking here.
Om Malik of Gigaom posted some interesting stats released by HitWise . The HitWise study of 56 leading Social Networking sites shows that just over 67% of US Visits were received by MySpace with Facebook receiving only 20.56 %.
I created a new Twitter side image for my Twitter profile this evening. To learn how to create your own visit our previous post Twitter - Create a unique Twitter Profile.
I am still in awe over how someone from 3M could NOT have understood the ramifications of their decision regarding their 3M post it note scandal regardless of their knowledge of social media.
Its equatable to taking the idea from a novel and spinning it into a marketing campaign and expecting to NOT compensate or acknowledge the originating idea and author.
Maybe 3M should focus less on hiring people with degrees and more on hiring those with common sense
If you haven’t heard yet, Scott Ableman was contacted by 3M after he and some colleagues placed over 1000 post its on a car and their photos went viral. 3M wanted to use the photos but offered a ridiculous amount for the royalty fees to use the photos in their back to school promotions. They then took the idea and ‘created’ their own knock off images piggy backing on the already established viral photos.
I can’t believe 3M doesn’t understand the value of the image they attempted to ‘buy’ for pennies. However, maybe they don’t since they obviously underestimated the viral nature of the resulting PR issues.
Social Media is used by the ‘ next generation’ of entrepreneurs. Wouldn’t that be one of 3m’s audiences ? The same audience they have just hugely offended ?
I have been doing quite a bit of reading about the 3M issue, this morning David Scott’s comments on Web Inked got me thinking about Social Media Guidelines for corporations. He suggests 5 on the Web Inked Blog. You may want to check them out.
